The Studio

Personal one-to-one training or semi-private sessions are created for you by Amanda. They include both machine based exercises and matwork that can be developed into a home maintenance programme, should you so wish. These individually prepared personal programmes make Pilates an excellent choice for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

Many people come to Pilates as part of a rehabilitation programme as suggested by their osteopath or chiropractor (both of whom Sublime Pilates works with closely). Amanda shows her clients how to apply learnings from the Studio to their day to day lives and in this way make positive and long-lasting changes. With an holistic approach to the re-education of one’s posture and altering poor movement patterns, she is able to help her clients alleviate aches and pains, strengthen their core and relieve stress and tension whilst promoting a general feeling of wellbeing.

It is for this reason that although many people begin as rehabilitation clients, they often don’t leave once they are rehabilitated as they find the more advanced Pilates equipment work fun, challenging and thoroughly rewarding.

    Cycle of Illness

cycle of illnessChronic physical illness causes a negative emotional state and this emotional state can eventually lead to a compromised immune system.

The situation can be particularly devastating since the weakened immune system will then be more vulnerable to further infection; a new infection leading to further emotional depression.

A downward spiral of emotional and physical health can consequently ensue, producing a vicious cycle of illness that can be very difficult to break without treatment.

Scientists have proven that negative and positive emotions really can change the complex chemistry of our bodies, and that these changes can have a negative or positive effect on the immune system.

Prolonged Stress Increases Cortisal and Adrenalin

For example, some research has shown how prolonged stress can cause the body's adrenal glands to over-produce the hormones cortisol and adrenalin.

These hormones are normally secreted to produce bursts of energy as part of the 'fight or flight' response and naturally this response is an essential tool for survival.

Prolonged periods of emotional and psychological pressures however, means that the over-production of these hormones can begin to weaken the integrity of the immune system as they reduce the level of T-helper cells, and inhibit the production of natural killer cells.

The Pilates method, originally termed “Contrology” by Joseph Pilates, is a unique approach to whole body health. His interpretation of physical fitness was the attainment and continued maintenance of a balanced, developed body and a sound mind able to perform one’s daily requirements with zest and pleasure. Exercise (and massage) are proven methods of releasing stress and can help to keep these hormones at a healthy production level.
