Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

aromatherapyAromatherapy is a complementary therapy based on the use of concentrated plant essences (essential oils) extracted from flowers, leaves, roots, peel, resin or bark. It is designed to treat the person as a whole, not just the symptom or disease, by assisting the body's natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself. Aromatherapy treatments, now recognised by many health professionals, aim to improve both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Aromatherapy Benefits for Me, My Family, My Employees

Aromatherapy is used to reduce the symptoms of a range of conditions including stress, anxiety, chronic pain, headaches, insomnia, problems with the immune system, menstrual or menopausal problems and digestive problems.

Backache, irritable bowel syndrome and headaches are often the result of stress and not actually a physical problem. Therefore no amount of pill-popping is going to provide a long term solution since it only masks the symptoms without addressing the underlying problem.

By looking at the causes of the stress and providing treatments to ease and manage it, our Sublime aromatherapist can alleviate the condition in a much more efficient manner.

How do the Essential Oils Work?

aromatherepayWhen applied to the body, essential oils penetrate the skin via the hair follicles and sweat glands and are absorbed into the body fluids, where they help to kill bacteria and viruses and stimulate the body's immune system, thereby strengthening resistance to further attack.

Some essential oils increase the circulation and help with the efficient elimination of toxins, others promote new cell growth and encourage the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Each essential oil has its own character and aroma, exhibiting a varying number of properties and benefits which are unique to itself, since no two essential oils are quite the same.

How are Essential Oils Applied?

Regular use of aromatherapy treatments and home-use products can help to strengthen the immune system, thereby establishing a preventative approach to overall health.

  • Essential oils can be blended in a carrier oil and massaged into the skin. Our Sublime Personal Blends can also be used in a warm bath for therapeutic effect to the mind and body and with the added benefit of silky smooth skin.
  • Essential oils may be inhaled or added to an aromatherapy oil burner or diffuser. The steam containing the oil spreads through the air in the room.
  • Essential oils can be blended into creams or lotions.

How Does an Aromatherapy Massage Treatment Work?

essential oilsThe aromatherapy massage is the most powerful application of essential oils as the massage treatment in itself creates a sense of relaxation on the body's musculature and nervous system.

As essential oils influence our emotions, aromatherapy can help to lift depression, soothe irritable nerves and generally encourage an improved feeling of wellbeing.

The therapeutic action of the essential oils when brought together with the revitalising effects of massage stimulate all of the organs in the body including the skin, muscles, nerves and glands. The increased circulation of the blood and lymph flow also assist with the cleansing the body of toxins.

Controls Emotions

In addition to this, on inhalation of the blended essential oils, the olfactory system, part of the brain that is connected to smell, is triggered. A signal is transferred to the brain's limbic system that controls emotions and stores and retrieves learned memories.

This causes chemicals to be released that are believed to have relaxing or stimulating effects, depending on the blend of essential oils chosen by the aromatherapist.

The aromatherapy blend is always offered to the client prior to use in order that the scent is appreciated and even luxuriated in.
